Chapter 28

Circus Garza—Around the same time

Marcus rushed through the midway—filled with disgusting smells and cheap plastic toys—letting the bottlenecked crowd shield them from Tig’s snooping. The police officers were stopping everyone from leaving. With a flick of his gaze, he cut his way through and convinced them not to see anything as he ran to the parking lot, Nicholas jogging to keep up with him.

He herded his mate into the car, and they drove past the protestors.

Once they were underway, Nicholas glowered at him and snapped, “You’re going the wrong direction. Why aren’t we going to the hospital?”

Marcus continued driving toward home. “I need time to think.”

“What’s there to think about? My friend needs your help. Is this because you’re jealous of him?”

Marcus pulled the car over and parked in the small shopping district outside the Hill’s gates. He was too furious to have this conversation and drive. “How I feel about Ryan is irrelevant. We can’t save every mortal. If we did, we would be discovered for what we are.”

“There are always exceptions, and you know that.”

“Nic—”

“If you’re not going to help Ryan, why did you need to leave the circus so quickly?”

Marcus paused for a moment. How much to admit? “Tig wants to interview me.”

“So?”

“I need to consider what to tell her.”

“How about the truth?”

He tugged at his mustache. Damn. If he told Tig the truth, Nicholas would find out. Would it be better coming from his lips? He wasn’t sure he could count on Tig to keep the secret from his mate…

He stared out the windshield. A sinking sensation invaded his gut. The truth would be like a stake through the heart, the car becoming the coffin for their relationship. Finally, he said, “You aren’t going to like my alibi.”

“Huh? You had to make a phone call.” Nicholas wrinkled his brow, puzzled, then narrowed his eyes. “Ari received a call and left shortly after you did…”

Damn it. The hurt forming on Nicholas’s face crushed Marcus.

“Did you call Ari to meet you outside?” Nicholas finally asked.

The wall Marcus had erected to protect his mate from the truth had crumbled, burying him in the rubble. He struggled to take a deep breath. “Ari, ah, he was…flirting with me when you weren’t looking, playing footsies and scuffing up my shoes. I didn’t like it. I called him outside to tell him to stop. I didn’t want to make a scene during the show.”

“I told you before I didn’t like the way he looked at you. He knows we’re mated.”

Marcus closed his eyes, trying to find the courage to say it. “Instead of taking my reprimand seriously, Ari propositioned me. He wanted to have a threesome with us.”

“Well, that’s not happening.”

“Precisely. I told him absolutely no. I wasn’t sharing you.”

Nicholas cocked his head to the side. “I don’t understand why he would even suggest such a thing.”

Could the wall around the truth be repaired and the bricks mortared back in place? Marcus searched his memory. He’d never lied to Nicholas about anything this important.
