Chapter 28
Circus GarzaâAround the same time
Marcus rushed through the midwayâfilled with disgusting smells and cheap plastic toysâletting the bottlenecked crowd shield them from Tigâs snooping. The police officers were stopping everyone from leaving. With a flick of his gaze, he cut his way through and convinced them not to see anything as he ran to the parking lot, Nicholas jogging to keep up with him.
He herded his mate into the car, and they drove past the protestors.
Once they were underway, Nicholas glowered at him and snapped, âYouâre going the wrong direction. Why arenât we going to the hospital?â
Marcus continued driving toward home. âI need time to think.â
âWhatâs there to think about? My friend needs your help. Is this because youâre jealous of him?â
Marcus pulled the car over and parked in the small shopping district outside the Hillâs gates. He was too furious to have this conversation and drive. âHow I feel about Ryan is irrelevant. We canât save every mortal. If we did, we would be discovered for what we are.â
âThere are always exceptions, and you know that.â
âNicââ
âIf youâre not going to help Ryan, why did you need to leave the circus so quickly?â
Marcus paused for a moment. How much to admit? âTig wants to interview me.â
âSo?â
âI need to consider what to tell her.â
âHow about the truth?â
He tugged at his mustache. Damn. If he told Tig the truth, Nicholas would find out. Would it be better coming from his lips? He wasnât sure he could count on Tig to keep the secret from his mateâ¦
He stared out the windshield. A sinking sensation invaded his gut. The truth would be like a stake through the heart, the car becoming the coffin for their relationship. Finally, he said, âYou arenât going to like my alibi.â
âHuh? You had to make a phone call.â Nicholas wrinkled his brow, puzzled, then narrowed his eyes. âAri received a call and left shortly after you didâ¦â
Damn it. The hurt forming on Nicholasâs face crushed Marcus.
âDid you call Ari to meet you outside?â Nicholas finally asked.
The wall Marcus had erected to protect his mate from the truth had crumbled, burying him in the rubble. He struggled to take a deep breath. âAri, ah, he wasâ¦flirting with me when you werenât looking, playing footsies and scuffing up my shoes. I didnât like it. I called him outside to tell him to stop. I didnât want to make a scene during the show.â
âI told you before I didnât like the way he looked at you. He knows weâre mated.â
Marcus closed his eyes, trying to find the courage to say it. âInstead of taking my reprimand seriously, Ari propositioned me. He wanted to have a threesome with us.â
âWell, thatâs not happening.â
âPrecisely. I told him absolutely no. I wasnât sharing you.â
Nicholas cocked his head to the side. âI donât understand why he would even suggest such a thing.â
Could the wall around the truth be repaired and the bricks mortared back in place? Marcus searched his memory. Heâd never lied to Nicholas about anything this important.
